My dad loves political cartoons.
And I can see why.
Political cartoons are masters of taking big ideas (laden with thoughts, feelings, and emotions) and boiling them down into bite-sized pictures and phrases. (Yes, just like good advertising.)
In fact, my dad likes political cartoons so much he'll even come up with ideas for his own.
But, sadly, he can't draw.
So the other day I tried cajoling him into joining an online cartooning class I know of. But he shot the idea down quick saying "I don't have any natural talent".
To which I lovingly told him: "that's bullshit".
See, I don't believe in "natural talent".
Because if I did, I would've never learned much of anything.
Take handstands for example.
Two years ago I became obsessed with them. And so I learned everything I could and began practicing every day. And though progress was slow, I got better over time. And now I can hold a badass 60+ second handstand, walk on my hands across the room, and am progressing to more advanced positions.
But let me tell you, I had zero natural handstand talent..
In fact, in many ways I was starting from a deficit. Because I had very little upper body strength, a torqued body from playing baseball and tennis as a kid, and especially had messed up wrists (which, as you can imagine, are pretty important for handstands).
So no, I didn't have any natural talent or god-given gifts when it comes to handstands.
I only accomplished it because I wanted to. And that is the same for anything that you may want to learn.
Whether it's political cartoons, writing copy, or standing on your hands.
It just takes work and time.
Sure there are advantages and limitations. If you are born 6'11" you are much more likely to be a great basketball player. But you wouldn't make a good jockey.
But the truth is most of aren't trying to play in the NBA or win the Breeder's Cup. Most of us just want to ball with our buds at the gym. Or ride our horse through the meadow.
If you don't want to learn something, you don't have to. But please don't let "natural talent" be the reason why you don't.
