If there’s one superpower that exists on earth, it has to be charisma; the ability to get people on your side and supporting your mission just by dint of who you are and how you make others feel.
One such charismatic leader was Teddy Roosevelt (lay aside the racism, sabre-rattling, and war-mongering for a moment). One reason he was so charismatic, was that he knew how to get people interested in him.
And he did it by finding out what people were interested in… then simply talking about that.
It’s a complete no-brainer. And one of the most powerful ways to persuade others to support you in your mission.
But when most of us want to interest others, whether as a friend, significant other, client, or business partner, they talk about themselves. They talk about the courses they took, the successes they’ve had, the places they’ve visited, the lunch they masticated, blah blah blah blah blah...
But this is the opposite of what they should do. Because the extremely simple, yet extremely important fact is that everyone you meet is far more interested in themselves than they are in you.
As Dale Carnegie wrote:
"A boil on one’s neck interests one more than forty earthquakes in Africa.”
Whether or not that's a good thing is a topic for another discussion.
But for now, just understand that the best way to interest people is to find out what interests them and talk about it.
And by doing this you begin to go from simply selling your offers… to selling the relationship.
Think about it from Roosevelt’s perspective:
If he was only interested in selling his offer (in his case, whatever policies and laws he wanted), then he would've studied up on law, policy, facts, and figures. Instead he focused on selling the relationship first. Which meant talking about whatever niche topics interested his constituents.
And the relationship with your prospects and customers is the most valuable business asset you can possibly have. So I suggest you do the same.
