One of my greatest fears in life is being caught among disorderly mobs.
Large throngs of pulsating peoples. With no leader, purpose, or even a goal. It's a terrifying proposition for me. Even if they aren't violent. If they are violent, then it is a full-blown nightmare (maybe I died a gruesome death in a past life). One of the reasons mobs are scary as the dickens, is due to a psychological trigger I will share with you today. And though it is unlikely you will ever need this to save a life, it is possible. Either way, you can use this tip to spank your sales much higher and tear gas your competition in the process. And this tip has to do with "mob mentality". Mob mentality driven by the psychological trigger of "social proof". Now social proof is old hat in the marketing world. Many people talk about it. But most people talk about it as if it were oxygen. That if you use little to no social proof in your ad you're sales can only suffocate. According to lots of science, that ain't necessarily true. In some cases, social proof has little importance. But other times, social proof is a key reason why people buy. Say you are at a fancy banquet for example. And you being the uncouth and hasty-witted coxcomb (just teasing) don't know how to fold your napkin, when to make a toast, or even which fork to use. You don't want to embarrass yourself. So what do you do? It's obvious right? You look around to see what others are doing and follow suit. And the reason you do that is because you are unsure. You are confused. Out of your element. And don't know how to act. And this, my rump-fed rapscallion, is why social proof is central to mob mentality. When hundreds of people are standing together, with little to no idea of what to do, and confusion is the only connecting string, social proof over any other psychological trigger runs the day. So next time you make an offer to your list, ask yourself how you audience will react. Is it an offer they've purchased before? Is it an offer they've at least seen? Or is it something that's brand new? The newer and less proven your offer, the more social proof you'll need. Simple right? Good. Use it and profit. Heck, use it and you may save a life.
