When it comes to list-building… are you the tortoise or the hare?

Happy Turtlesday my lapine-like friend. Here’s a true story to wet your list-building whistle:

Yesterday I had the pleasure of being a guest on ‘The Root Of All Business Podcast’. The host gave me a mighty fine compliment. He said that he hated writing emails, but after talking with me, he may give it another shot.

During the interview he asked me about list building and whether Yours Listless has any list-building tips. Since so many give tactical answers to a question like that (giving you how-to steps to build a list), I prefer to to give principle-based answers.

In other words, I like to give the reasons why, instead of the what to do.

Because when you know the reasons why, you can create your own plan of what to do.

Anyway, when he asked me about list-building, here’s what I said more or less:

“What many people miss when it comes to list-building is that it’s not about the size of your list, but the number of qualified leads on your list. So instead of focusing on simply building a list, focus on building it the right way. Which means attracting people who are active buyers in the market you sell in.”

And this all starts before they join your list. It starts with the content you put out to drive traffic… and continues with your opt-in page and opt-in bribe.

So when it comes to winning the list-building race, be the tortoise, not the hare. And over the long run, you’ll build a valuable asset to your business. One that you can contact regularly to sell your goods or services.

And if you’re not currently seeing high-quality names pop up on your list, go back to your opt-in page and bribe and see if you can make any tweaks.

Of course, what you do after new prospects join your list is very important too. Because it sets the tone for the rest of the relationship. Even if you onboard a qualified new prospect in the right way, if you send boring and not-useful emails they’ll ignore you like week-old chow mein.

Which is a major problem indeed.
